Weeds
Weeds
By Liz King
Weeds can overtake any garden and grow out of control, making it impossible to get back control of your beautiful flower bed and causing you to throw in your gardening gloves. I can speak from experience. I do not have a green thumb. I joke that my house is where the house plants come to die. Never give me a potted plant, it will not survive the winter. It might not even see the winter. This blogpost was inspired by my garden and a revelation God showed me and I have dwelt on it ever since.
My family moved into our home in 2018, and the lawn was well manicured with a beautiful rock garden that I tried to keep up. I was constantly pulling weeds, and this invasive ivy type plant took over. I couldn’t keep up with it. I was afraid to spray to kill it because we have an active squirrel and bird population and I just gave up. I was afraid the weed killer would kill the animals. I was outside the other day, and I was pulling up the tree sprouts. There was one that was right next to the house trying to climb up. It was embedded in the rocks next to my house trying to climb up it. I pulled it up and it started coming out of the rocks like a rope leading me along towards the yard and it kept coming. It was a vine. As I kept pulling it the root of it was about three yards deep in the ivy that I had quit trying to fight with. God then showed me that is the same with sin. Sin is the weeds that choke out his beauty and truth.
Sin seeks to take over and destroy us, just like weeds seek to destroy a garden. Our garden is our heart. Many become Lazy when it comes to tending to the garden of their heart. They don't want to take the time it requires, and a lot of that time is spending time with God in his word and in prayer and that takes sacrifice. When we stop fighting to protect ourselves against sin, we open ourselves up for other sin to weasel itself in and creep in and we aren’t even aware it’s invaded, because we are no longer sensitive to it. The house is our heart. Sin invades. When we quit trying to fight sin or stand for the truth, or to turn away from evil, it's like weeds in a garden. Sin seeks to destroy us and make us unfruitful as believers. It seeks to make us unproductive as believers to, to choke us out. If sin is not dealt with and is unrepentant, it can multiply and harden the heart to the Holy Spirit and his conviction.
We need a weed killer or a sin killer, that sin killer’s name is Jesus and we also use the word of God to keep the weeds away. The truth of God helps prevent the weeds from growing and taking root. We don’t need to let the weeds grow before they grow out of control and they choke out your garden. God wants to grow the garden of your heart. So, if you're having a weed problem, time to get the weed killer and make it fertile soil again so your garden can grow properly and flourish.
