Is Your Relationship With God One Sided?
Is Your Relationship With God One Sided
By Liz King
No one likes a one sided relationship where you give everything to the other person and all they do is take. You pour your heart out to them, sacrifice for them, shower them with gifts, but the other person never notices but only demands more of you. Sometimes maybe you are brushed off or even more is demanded of you. You go out of your way and give to them and they don’t even say thank you or acknowledge what you’ve done. Sometimes even though you have given everything for the other person, they leave and go to someone else. Now I want you to see yourself as the other person and the one doing everything in the relationship is Jesus.
Prayer is essential in our relationship with Christ but for some it is not an essential and that is why so many are weak in their faith. Prayer is talking to God. It’s not a well worded formal prayer, it is speaking your heart in truth. It is talking to God throughout the day. Many claim to pray everyday, but how many of our prayers are one sided. We just tell him OUR needs and wants and have no consideration for HIS needs and wants. A life with Christ is relationship. How can it really be a relationship if it’s just about us?
Jesus is faithful even in our failings. He is merciful and understanding but he also wants you to surrender and let him lead the relationship. I got up this morning and it is raining and miserable and it sometimes is a struggle for me to get functioning. As I was making my coffee I was struggling to pray. I then began just talking to God and it hurt me that sometimes I struggle spending time with him. I began to talk to God about how much it must hurt him that his children don’t want to spend time with him. It would hurt my feelings. I spend time with him every day but it hurt me that he longs to spend time with me and I fight the need to spend time with him and I don’t know why. He is the best thing that ever happened to me! He brings me peace and hope. I love listening to music and worshiping him. I know there is a spiritual battle for my time. The more time I spend with God, the more I get to become who he created me to be. The enemy does not want that. It wants me stuck, stunted, and unable to grow.
Jesus has feelings too. He wants to talk to us, he wants us to hear him, but many are unwilling to spend time with him. Many just care about themselves in the relationship. Some only turn to God when THEY NEED HIM, or in an emergency. When a prayer is answered they walk away and just abandon him till the next time they need him. How would that make you feel? God is not a God of convenience !! It hurts him. He loves you!! He gave everything for you, yet some are not willing to put in an effort to know him, listen for him or to him. Would you want to be in a relationship like that. That’s not even a relationship!! Talk to him throughout the day. Thank him for the little things. Invite him into situations in your life. He waits for us every day. He doesn’t have to and he doesn’t need to, but he does!! He desires us. The creator of the universe WANTS us to know him. He wants YOU! If someone loves us so much why do we push him away. Many of us choose ourselves or others over him every time. We need to realize he wants us to revolutionize our relationship with him. He is not the selfish one in the relationship, we are. It’s our fallen nature. So if we really love him, then we should begin to quit being so one sided in our prayer life and relationship with him.
