When worship becomes about us and not about God
I have been studying heaven about 8 months now and it has totally changed my perception of who God is and WHY I am to worship! Learning about how HUGE God is, how beautiful he is, what he has created for us in eternity, the glory of him and Jesus, He is so beautiful, loving, and AWESOME!!!
1 Chronicles 16:23-32
23 Sing to the LORD, all the earth; proclaim his salvation day after day. 24 Declare his glory among the nations, his marvelous deeds among all peoples. 25 For great is the LORD and most worthy of praise; he is to be feared above all gods. 26 For all the gods of the nations are idols, but the LORD made the heavens. 27 Splendor and majesty are before him; strength and joy are in his dwelling place. 28 Ascribe to the LORD, all you families of nations, ascribe to the LORD glory and strength. 29 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; bring an offering and come before him. Worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness. 30 Tremble before him, all the earth! The world is firmly established; it cannot be moved. 31 Let the heavens rejoice, let the earth be glad; let them say among the nations, “The LORD reigns!”
We in our sinful nature cannot understand his glory. There is no darkness in him, so much so even the best person on earth would weep begging for forgiveness in his presence when they came before God, because he exposes any evil in us!! Sin separated us from God and because of that we followed our own sinful desires. Through worship we acknowledge who he is and it helps us connect to him.
I have a worship playlist on my phone. I listen to it in the morning, because it prepares me for my alone time with God, and when I do chores. But as I listened to some of them I realized some songs considered worship songs were more about me and my needs rather than who God is!! Then I began thinking if I’m preparing my heart to be one with him why am I singing about myself? Worship isn’t about myself, it’s about him.
I started going through my songs and redoing my playlist to worship God and who he is rather than what he is gonna do for me. Worship should never be about ourselves!! Only who he is and what he has done.
We don’t go to our child who won first prize in something they worked hard for and then talk about us. No! We congratulate them, tell them what a good job they did. We tell everyone about who they are and what they did. It’s the same way with God. When you realize who he is, how much he loves us, what he has created for us, what he has planned for us, and what he has rescued us from you will want to praise him.
My friend is obsessed with queen Elizabeth and if she showed up at her house for tea and crumpets, she would gush all over her, tell her how marvelous she is and all the things she had done. My husband loves Pearl Jam. If Eddie Vedder walked in his office today my husband would probably stand there in shock and disbelief when that wore off, he’d probably tell him about the first time he saw him and tell him how he loves his songs, all the while the little boy in him is screaming like an excited school girl. He would just want to talk about Eddie not himself, because since he was a teen that has been his favorite band! There have been people in my life I would have done that to too. If a Doctor from Doctor Who would have walked through my door a few months ago, I would have screamed, told them how much they had meant to me in my life and that I loved them. Because it had a big piece of my heart. I guess I had idolized them.
What I’m getting at is, shouldn’t that be the same way with God? Are we the same way with God? Are we worshiping God? Does he have a huge part of your heart? We should want to praise him and sing about what HE’S done. Do we realize WE can come into HIS presence anytime, anywhere? Do you get excited when your getting ready to be in his presence? Do you get giddy like a schoolgirl or just become numb to a ritual?
Worship is intimate. In intimacy you tell them how much you love them, so it is with worship! I challenge you to rethink worship. Do you sing more about you in your worship or is it all about him? Get excited that the creator of the universe is in your presence!! He is the one who so lovingly put you together and put a part of himself in you! Be a school girl in front of him and praise him for who he is and what he has done! Plus, You don’t have to ask for an autograph from him, because YOU ARE his autograph!!!
These are my thoughts but I challenge you to also examine your worship.
Psalms 95:1-3
1O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.
2Let us come before his presence with thanksgiving, and make a joyful noise unto him with psalms.
3For the LORD is a great God, and a great King above all gods.
