What is trust?
By Liz King
What is trust? The definitions are:
1. firm belief in the reliability, truth, ability, or strength of someone or something. 2. an arrangement whereby a person (a trustee) holds property as its nominal owner for the good of one or more beneficiaries.
Trust is a powerful thing. It’s something earned, gained, twisted, and broken. It can build up or destroy.
When we are born, we immediately begin to learn the act of trust and it can effect our outcome in life. In this process it can either lead us to success or failure. We look to our parents and that is our first experience with trust. We trust that our parents will feed us, provide for us, teach us, love us, listen to us, and always be there for us. For some children, that trust is broken. It leaves scars that last a lifetime, effecting the relationships we have with others.
We have trust in our friendships, our marriages, our families, our co-workers, our bosses, or a business partner. Trust is the foundation in life and sometimes we break peoples trust. Be it through selfishness, gossip, breaking confidence, greed, the list goes on.
I have broken trust many times in my lifetime and lived with that shame and am sometimes reminded of it. I have also had my trust broken and lived with that hurt and trust is hard to get back when someone breaks trust. The enemy loves to destroy trust! It builds up walls that we think protect us, yet that can hurt us more and hurt those around us.
Proverbs 3:5-6
“5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; 6 in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight.”
When you have had your trust broken living out these verses can be very difficult. I love the definitions of trust because it describes God’s nature perfectly, but the second definition is my favorite! Once we accept Jesus Christ, He becomes our trustee!! He is strong! He is truth!! We can know, He is reliable!
If we have been hurt, back stabbed, taken advantage of, beaten, cheated, slandered, lied to, God is telling us we can trust HIM!! Even though we can’t understand because of past hurt, we can know he will never fail us! How do we know that? Because God IS LOVE!
1 John 4:16
“God is love, and all who live in love live in God, and God lives in them. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him. God is love, and he that dwelleth in love dwelleth in God, and God in him.”
I was reading 1 Corinthians 13:4-8 the other day. It says, “4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
8 Love never fails. “
Then God’s spirit said now replace love with God. Then I re-read it.
4 God is patient, God is kind. He does not envy, he does not boast, he is not proud. 5 God does not dishonor others, God is not self-seeking, God is not easily angered, God keeps no record of wrongs. 6 God does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 God always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. It blew my mind. I’d never seen it that way before.
We as humans have never experienced true, pure, holy love. The love we have for a spouse, our children, our friends is a reflection of Gods love. Sadly some have destroyed what love is in others, keeping them from understanding or accepting the love of God. But He IS trustworthy!! Even when we accept Christ we can still struggle and not trust, especially when it comes to our own lives. Thankfully Jesus Heals! We just have to step out in faith, knowing God will keep his promises. Healing is hard. Sometimes we don’t understand. Sometimes the answers are not what we want but He sees the eternal, we only see the present. We need to change our present perspective and live with an eternal perspective. We just have to trust!!
“But my God shall supply all your needs according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:19
